Celebrate Australia Day in Berrima Village 2023

If you’ve been a part of the cherished tradition of Australia Day in charming Berrima Village over the past 20 years, you can expect some surprises from the 2023 event.

Together with Wingecarribee Shire Council, the local community have come through challenging times to re-shape the future of Australia Day celebrations in Berrima and plan a big come-back on 26 January 2023.

It all begins with a Citizenship Ceremony outside historic Berrima Courthouse Museum that will welcome over 50 new residents to the region. There will not be the street parade that has been held in the past but all the key elements will still be there to enjoy, all day. From friendly fun , with local food-and-wine pop-ups lining the laneways of Berrima, forge action from the village blacksmith, live entertainment and more! Here’s a taste of what’s in store and why Berrima is the place to experience true community spirit:

Berrima Village shop owners will all offer something special to supplement their store’s regular trading

  • Diego and the team at the Berrima General Store Café will be tempting you with local lamb slowed cooked on the spit, in addition to their in-cafe menu Baked in Berrima will cater for takeaway of authentic Italian pizza fresh from the oven, for your outdoor feasting pleasure
  • Schmokin are doing just that, getting out the smoker for sublime BBQ brisket
  • On top of the locally-loved pub food at the Surveyor General Inn, Rob and his team will put on a quintessential sausage sizzle, and burgers, out in the front courtyard. Local lad Angus Murray and his band are playing too!
  • Karen at Courtyard Café will deliver her locally sourced menu and bring in her favourite suppliers for Meet the Makers stalls
  • Eschalot are offering their Argentinian BBQ chef’s ‘feed me’ menu for lunch and dinner
  • Book into Peppergreen for lunch or a wine tasting but if you miss out, don’t worry they are launching new picnic hampers to pick up and enjoy across the road in the park
  • Berrima Vault House is also making sure you head into the village, and their wonderful 1844 Vault House restored in 2022 for a day of live music, one of Tommy Prosser’s famous spit roasts, and their newly launched Aperol Bar and BVH Cornhole championships (google it!! Very popular lawn game in North America)
  • Mrs Oldbucks Pantry and Table will be dressed up ready to greet you with her delicious blend of jam, teas and delights
    Village Market will be open from 10am to 4pm on Argyle Street from the Goal (cnr Wilshire Street) to the Pub, (cnr Wingecarribee Street) Already we have some great stalls planned with more to come
  • Bendooley Estate will be joining us in the village for wine tastings. Local Blacksmith Stephen Hogwood will be belting the forge and showcasing this artisan craft for onlookers
  • Joadja Distillery will be showcasing their famous whisky as well as their other spirits
  • Vintage Cars will be lining the street so enthusiasts and the like can enjoy banter with their devoted owners
  • You can enjoy a wine tasting with Joadja Estate Vineyard as well as they come into Berrima Village for the day
  • New Berrima business ‘Welcome to Wild’ will have a stall, There aim is to connect kids with nature by encouraging their natural curiosity and unique view of their world. Its all about teaching kids about conservation
  • If you need a breather from all the activity, you can grab a seat and have a Cuppa with Council
  • There will also be local producers, more artisans and independent retailers
  • The Museum will be free for the day and open from 10.00am to 3.00pm.
    Their latest installation will be GARDENS and LANDCAPES of the SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS Then and now. This delightful exhibition is viewed on 10 High-Definition Screens in our Digital Gallery
  • You will be able to admire some antique horse drawn carriages and a gun carriage as well at the park and we are hoping to turn the village hall into a free movie theatre for the day.
  • You can also browse local businesses like Michael Reid Southern Highlands, Australian Alpaca, Josh’s Café, the Courthouse, Whitewall Art Projects or drop into Harpers Mansion.

    Enjoy Australia Day celebrations sampling the best of Berrima’s PepperGreen Estates fresh produce and premium award-winning wines.     Did you know Berrima has a two family friendly playgrounds? Enjoy Berrima Market Place Park with climbing castle, in-ground mini trampolines, a seesaw, play-net, swings, toddler play ship and a 25m flying fox as well as BBQ’s, bathrooms and picnic tables. 

    And then there is the Berrima River Reserve also with a playground, camping facilities and access to the local river for some wild swimming. From here you can also do the Berrima River Walk and read about the history of this wonderful highland town as you take in the natural spaces, river and wildlife.
